They look quite a bit like Amano shrimp but have a downwardly-curved tail; I’ll try to get side-by-side photos to compare soon. Here’s the verbatim description from that link above, in case it rots:

We don’t know exactly what species these Green Leaf Algae Eating Shrimp are, but they are similar to Caridina typus in many ways, so we are going with Caridina cf. typus. To me, the pattern down the back and the bulkier body shape help distinguish them from Amano Shrimp. Also, our Green Leaf Algae eating shrimp only have 2 rows of dots down their sides whereas our Amanos have 3-4 rows of dots on their sides. This might not hold true at a species level, but seems to hold true for the strains we carry. One last distinction is that the Green Leaf Algae Eating Shrimp are highly varied in color. Some are rusty orange, others green, brown, or grey and some have quite a bit of yellow on them.

One of the packed shrimp must have been carrying eggs, because there were larvae in the shipping bag. They were very tiny — I think smaller than Amano larvae but, again, I need to compare side-by-side to be sure. I have no real hope of raising up these larvae but out of curiosity I quickly set up a 2.5-gallon tank with 33ppt sea water, a bit of f/2 fertilizer, and a Nannochloropsis starter. The phyto culture is in fresh water so it may or may not grow after the sudden dunking in seawater, but the shrimp larvae seemed fine with the instant transition from fresh to salt; 48 hours later I still have quite a few healthy larvae swimming in the saltwater tank.

Even if the Nannochloropsis grows fast enough to feed the larvae I don’t necessarily expect them to thrive; I’ve had much better luck feeding shrimp larvae tetraselmis. That said, I now know to not worry about careful larval acclimation if/when I get new larvae to raise.

One other note: Dan’s Fish suggests that these may be C. typus. iNaturalist suggest that typus eggs only develop fully in brackish water, or at least that the females carry eggs towards brackish water before hatching:

Females migrate downstream (to the mouth of a river or stream) or into brackish waters to spawn, using the upstream headwaters (the smallest part of a river or stream) only as a nursery.[5] This has been confirmed observation of ovigerous females in headwaters carrying non-eyed eggs, but ovigerous females downstream having eyed eggs.

My shrimps’ eggs clearly developed in freshwater without migration, so either iNaturalist is slightly wrong or these aren’t C. typus.

—

7 days later, 2026-03-31, there are only one or two larvae left in the salt water. The Nannochloropsis never bloomed properly so I suspect starvation but it might also be from too much salt. Hoping I get another spawn to try again.

A bought 8 of these shrimp from Dan’s Fish and they arrived yesterday — looks like I got the last ones since they pulled down the list after my delivery.
