{"id":1119,"date":"2011-01-29T14:01:58","date_gmt":"2011-01-29T20:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/?p=1119"},"modified":"2011-01-29T14:01:58","modified_gmt":"2011-01-29T20:01:58","slug":"shark-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/?p=1119","title":{"rendered":"Shark Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I rode out to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/ever\/planyourvisit\/svdirections.htm\">Shark Valley<\/a> (which is in the everglades, and doesn&#8217;t have anything to do with sharks &#8212; I believe it&#8217;s named after the Shark River).\u00a0 As I approached the everglades there was a lot of nice fuzzy pine forest, and I sort of imagined that the everglades would get pinier as I approached, but that was totally wrong.\u00a0 It looks much more like the mangroves in Yucatan&#8230; lots of brownish scrub, nothing more than 8 or 10 feet tall.<\/p>\n<p>The Shark Valley park mostly consisted of a paved road and canal built long ago by an oil company.\u00a0 A plaque along the road explains that the canal produces an &#8216;unnatural concentration of wildlife,&#8217; and they aren&#8217;t kidding!\u00a0 Alligators must travel from miles around for an uninterrupted patch of sunshine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1125\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/gator.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1125\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1125\" title=\"Exif_JPEG_PICTURE\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/gator.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parking lot for cars and alligators<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1122\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/turtles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1122\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1122\" title=\"Exif_JPEG_PICTURE\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/turtles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"510\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turtles compete for a patch of sunshine<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1127\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/gatorwarning1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1127\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1127\" title=\"Exif_JPEG_PICTURE\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/gatorwarning1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This warning sign actually did me some good.  The alligators were sleepy and statuesque, and I was sorely tempted to pose with my hand on their backs for scale.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1128\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/snakebird1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1128\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1128\" title=\"Exif_JPEG_PICTURE\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/snakebird1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"587\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These guys (&#39;Anhinga&#39;) spend a lot of time swimming, and a lot more time stretching their wings out to dry in the sun.  Right before I took this photo I watched one catch a fish which it then tossed into the air before swallowing.  Showoff!<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1126\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/blueheron.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1126\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1126\" title=\"Exif_JPEG_PICTURE\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/blueheron.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Also in the parking lot, a Great Blue Heron.
