For a while I was secretly nurturing hair algae so I would have an excuse to buy some <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elysia_(gastropod)\">Elysia<\/a> slugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"832\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Elysia-1-1024x832.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Elysia-1-1024x832.png 1024w, https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Elysia-1-300x244.png 300w, https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Elysia-1-768x624.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption> Elysia clarki, probably<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elysia are another great example of the oceans totally messing with my expectations about what&#8217;s a plant and what&#8217;s not &#8212; these slugs eat plants and, in eating them, become like plants, sequestering the chloroplasts and photosynthesizing most of the food they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The slugs did a great job of looking good but didn&#8217;t make much of a dent in the algae. I suspect that anyone who keeps these slugs in a system without too much turbulence or mechanical filtration is breeding them whether they know it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a short talk I gave about my slugs at a work event.
