This photo is of the train cleaning crew who hovered by the door waiting for the last passengers to exit so that they could rush in and vacuum before the train filled up again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; padding-bottom: 0pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flisrand.com\/nerdly\/Site\/Unspecified\/51DCB84F-769A-41AC-9308-7BBB1384D8E7_files\/TokyoTrainWindow.mov\" title=\"51DCB84F-769A-41AC-9308-7BBB1384D8E7_files\/TokyoTrainWindow.mov\">Here is what it looked like out the train window.<\/a><span> \u00a0It took a long long time for Tokyo to open up into the countryside, but it did happen, eventually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-1.jpg\" title=\"nikko-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-1.jpg\" alt=\"nikko-1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-2.jpg\" title=\"nikko-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-2.jpg\" alt=\"nikko-2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next set of photos are from a temple and shrine complex, \u2018temples\u2019 being Buddhist and \u2018shrines\u2019 being Shinto.  Due to lack of language skills, I don\u2019t know all the facts, but the shrines seem to mostly house Tukogawa shoguns &#8212; their spirits and, in some cases, their caskets as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; padding-bottom: 0pt\">I\u2019m sure that I\u2019m not grouping the Buddhist and Shinto photos properly. The lacquer is painted in layer after layer, one color at a time, and then each layer is carved away to reveal the color below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; padding-bottom: 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 20px; padding-bottom: 0pt\">These monkeys were heavily photographed, so I joined in. And then he performed a completely surprising magic trick&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-16.jpg\" title=\"nikko-16.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-16.jpg\" alt=\"nikko-16.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-17.jpg\" title=\"nikko-17.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/nikko-17.jpg\" alt=\"nikko-17.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The interior of the building (no photos allowed) was rectangular and full of statues and half-walls.  The docent clacked a woodblock here and there in a few places (nothing up my sleeves&#8230;) and then stood in a special spot and clacked again, and the whole building rang like a bell.  He did it a few more times so we could be sure we weren\u2019t hallucinating.  I have no idea if that\u2019s something that works by design or was discovered after the fact &#8212; the \u2018lucky\u2019 spot wasn\u2019t in the center or in a marked place, or anything that would suggest intent.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the complex were signs pointing to the \u2018sleeping cat\u2019.
