{"id":653,"date":"2009-02-17T02:36:12","date_gmt":"2009-02-17T08:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/2009\/02\/17\/seahorse-farm\/"},"modified":"2009-02-17T02:36:12","modified_gmt":"2009-02-17T08:36:12","slug":"seahorse-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/?p=653","title":{"rendered":"Seahorse farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This afternoon my mom and I visited the &#8216;Ocean Rider&#8217; seahorse farm.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a family operation which is developing domesticated varieties of seahorses which are suited for captivity &#8212; previously most pet seahorses were wild-caught, extremely finicky, and died promptly after <a href=\"http:\/\/nosheep.net\/wp-content\/upload\/monkey_ad.jpg\">sale<\/a>.\u00a0 Their mission is largely commercial (they&#8217;re a for-profit company and make their money selling seahorses to fishkeepers) but they&#8217;re also involved in some species preservation work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/oceanrider.jpg\" title=\"oceanrider sign\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/oceanrider.jpg\" alt=\"oceanrider sign\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/horsepose.jpg\" title=\"Close-up of an orange horse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/horsepose.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of an orange horse\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The horses in the hatchery (no photos allowed) certainly seemed domesticated.\u00a0 As soon as we tourists walked up to one of the tubs, the four adults rushed up to us and poked their noses out of the water. \u00a0 Part of the tour involves having the visitors feed shrimp (opea ula, below) to the breeders, so they have every reason to be pro-tourist.\u00a0 The new babies were extremely cute and also glad to see us &#8212; but, alas, unphotographable.<\/p>\n<p>There has been an experimental <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocean_thermal_energy_conversion\">energy plant<\/a> here on the coast for 30 or so years which uses the temperature gradient between deep and surface ocean water to generate electricity.\u00a0 A side effect of all that pumping is big supply of uphill seawater, so a constellation of aquaculture facilities have sprouted up around the energy plant.\u00a0 (I&#8217;m still hoping to visit the abalone farm before the week is out.)\u00a0 There&#8217;s also an airport a couple of miles away for easy shipping.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of free seawater means that the water-quality technology at the seahorse farm is appallingly simple &#8212; clean water comes in from a big pipe, dirty water rolls out into the ocean.\u00a0 No mucking with filtration or salt mixing or any of that nonsense required in the midwest.\u00a0 This is pretty much the same principle as the mess of tubes and overflow pipes in my basement tanks, only much much bigger (and, of course, with seawater rather than chlorinated Mississippi river water.)\u00a0 A system like this any distance from the ocean would cost zillions of dollars to operate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/inletpipes.jpg\" alt=\"some random plumbing\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/outflowpipe.jpg\" alt=\"outflow pipe\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you check out the farm&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seahorse.com\/\">website<\/a> (new-age soundtrack warning!) you can see that they&#8217;re selling blobs of seaweed for $20 a pop.\u00a0 This must be a big winner for them since the plants grow in big open-air tubs without requiring any apparent attention at all.\u00a0 The tourguide invited us to pull out a handful and take a bite, which Mom immediately did.\u00a0 (&#8220;Salty!&#8221;)\u00a0 At this point in the tour, my jealousy mounts:\u00a0 unlimited clean sea water, 360 days of sunshine per year&#8230; it&#8217;s almost unsportsmanlike.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/seaweed.jpg\" alt=\"seaweed tub\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The gimmicky (and most time-consuming) part of the tour involved poking freshly-scrubbed hands into one of the tanks so that a seahorse could be gingerly placed on our fingers.
