{"id":798,"date":"2010-02-10T00:12:05","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T06:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/2010\/02\/10\/newater-part-2\/"},"modified":"2010-02-10T00:12:05","modified_gmt":"2010-02-10T06:12:05","slug":"newater-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/?p=798","title":{"rendered":"Newater, part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Newater <a href=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/2010\/02\/07\/newater-visitor-centre\/\">visitor center<\/a> includes a small-scale version of the vast treatment plant that I ride past every day.\u00a0 They use a three-stage process:\u00a0 micro-filtration, reverse-osmosis, and UV filtration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterpurify1.jpg\" alt=\"newaterpurify1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterpurify2.jpg\" alt=\"newaterpurify2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Bundles of tiny, porous tubes which take up filtered water.\u00a0 Some unspecified percentage of the water left outside the tubes is &#8216;backwash&#8217; and discarded into the ocean.\u00a0 This section of the tour is accompanied by a charming video which shows little animated protozoans bashing into the outsides of the tubes and turning away.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterpurify5.jpg\" alt=\"newaterpurify5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>A few of the zillion r\/o chambers which make up phase two<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterpurify3.jpg\" alt=\"newaterpurify3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Another pleasing video and illustration scales the pores in the r\/o membrane to the size of tennis balls, and presents water molecules as ping-pong balls.\u00a0 In the video, a bacterium is illustrated by a large-sized building whacking into an enormous tennis net.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterpurify4.jpg\" alt=\"newaterpurify4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Here, suddenly, I wonder who the target audience of this presentation is.\u00a0 Is &#8216;Estrogen Endocrine Disruptor&#8217; really #3 on the worry list after &#8216;virus&#8217; and &#8216;bacteria?&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterpurify6.jpg\" alt=\"newaterpurify6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, photos that I took of the Ultraviolet phase were hopelessly overexposed.\u00a0 In any case the tour guide conceded that there is no scientific basis for the UV phase (since we&#8217;ve already established that all microorganisms have been filtered out earlier in the process) and it&#8217;s just there as a safeguard and\/or security blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the now-ultra-pure water is piped to semiconductor plants and other industries that need distilled or deionized water anyway.\u00a0 A tiny bit is pumped into the public reservoirs, but the long term plan is to pump increasingly more water back into the main water supply.\u00a0 I guess that&#8217;s so that right now they can tell people that there&#8217;s &#8220;only a little bit of pee&#8221; in the water and, a decade from now can say &#8220;hey, you&#8217;ve been drinking pee for years, what&#8217;s the big deal if it&#8217;s a little more?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I&#8217;m used to drinking out of the Mississippi, so I have a hard time taking the gross-out potential of recycled water seriously.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/newaterbottle1.jpg\" alt=\"newaterbottle1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The pure product doesn&#8217;t taste so great, though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Newater visitor center includes a small-scale version of the vast treatment plant that I ride past every day.\u00a0 They use a three-stage process:\u00a0 micro-filtration, reverse-osmosis, and UV filtration.
