{"id":986,"date":"2010-03-16T15:53:02","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T21:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/2010\/03\/16\/snacks-in-conclusion\/"},"modified":"2010-03-16T15:53:02","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T21:53:02","slug":"snacks-in-conclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/?p=986","title":{"rendered":"Snacks in Conclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back in Minneapolis.\u00a0 I never cease to be impressed by how very, very far it is from Malaysia to Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my last bunch of out-of-context food photos from the last week or so.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/ipohkacang.jpg\" alt=\"ipohkacang.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>An <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ice_kacang\">ice kacang<\/a> from a western-style coffee shop in a mall in Ipoh.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure if the ice cream and peanuts are Ipoh-style or just a feature of that particular cafe.\u00a0 The green frog-egg looking things are basil seeds&#8230; apparently they do that if you soak &#8217;em in water for a while. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/claypotrice.jpg\" alt=\"claypotrice.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Also from a mall in Ipoh, &#8216;Claypot Rice.&#8217;\u00a0 The pot is heated over a gas flame until it&#8217;s dangerously hot, then rice and chicken are scooped in where they get all toasty and crispy around the edges.\u00a0 The food is pretty basic, but there&#8217;s an element of excitement in that customers are expected to carry these glowing-hot loads on a plastic tray through a crowded food court to an empty seat.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a miracle that I didn&#8217;t require salve and bandages at the half-way point. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/kaosoikai.jpg\" alt=\"kaosoikai.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Kao Soi Kai&#8221; from a roadside stand in Samoeng.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khao_soi\">Kao Soi<\/a> is the default noodle dish of Chiang Mai.\u00a0 It&#8217;s coconut soup with flat, rich egg noodles and a bit of meat.\u00a0 Every version that I encountered also had crunchy chow mein noodles sprinkled on top. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jackfruitsalad.jpg\" alt=\"jackfruitsalad.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frommers.com\/destinations\/chiangmai\/D54060.html\">Huen Phen<\/a> restaurant in Chaing Mai:\u00a0 Jackfruit salad and &#8216;crispy pork&#8217; (which turns out to be the same thing as chicharones.) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/chiangmaibamboo.jpg\" alt=\"chiangmaibamboo.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Stuffed bamboo shoots, also from Huen Phen.\u00a0 I&#8217;m happy to report that you can get this same dish at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruam-mit-thai.net\/\">Ruam Mit<\/a> in St. Paul, and I like it slightly better there.\u00a0 Of course, the jackfruit options are a bit limited in St. Paul.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bogott.net\/unspecified\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/dumplingnoodle.jpg\" alt=\"dumplingnoodle.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Back in Singapore, my first priority was getting a bowl of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mee_pok\">mee pok<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/franstatic.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/09\/bedok-market-place-aka-simpang-bedok\/\">Bedok Market<\/a>.\u00a0 I will rejoice if I can find a place in Minnesota that serves Malaysian-style noodles in chili, but I suspect that you have to have a noodle factory nearby to produce the same effect. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back in Minneapolis.\u00a0 I never cease to be impressed by how very, very far it is from Malaysia to Minnesota.
