Epiplatys (in general)

I’m not going to write up all the Epiplatys species because my experience has been much the same with most of them. The exceptions are E. annulatus (tiny) and E. dageti (small); all the other species I’ve kept have been similarly large, robust fish.

And, they loved my tanks in Minneapolis. I generally kept them in 15 gallon tanks with very soft water and the surface choked with water sprite. Food wasn’t anything special, flakes and frozen blood worms, and my breeding technique consisted of periodically scooping fry from the surface.

The only real drawback to Epiplatys is their tendency to hold perfectly still, and to only show their colors with very specific lighting. No photos here, because they always wash out immediately in a photo box, and are generally hidden among the plants in their normal tanks.
