‘redeye tetra’

This is a fairly common farm-raised tetra. I have 5 adults, four of which are quite large and plump and one of which is only 2/3rds the size and skinny.

I took the small one to be a male and tried pairing it up with one of the larger fish several times with no results. Eventually I put the whole group together in a larger tank over a grid, and next morning there were a ton of infertile eggs and a few fertile ones. I don’t know if this means that I was wrong about determining sex, or if they only spawn as a group — other mentions online talk about spawning them as a single pair.

Apart from those false starts, the spawning setup was standard: pure r/o water over a mesh grid, with an anubias and some moss to provide a spawning target. They don’t seem to have cared about the plants as the eggs were just all over the place.

One note: many guides suggest that tetra fry need micro foods at first. For example, the seriouslyfish page says “They should be fed on an infusoria–type food for the first few days, until they are large enough to accept microworm or brine shrimp nauplii.” I’ve almost always found tetra fry to be able to eat brine shrimp as a first food, and this species is no exception. They spend a few days hanging off the plants and glass and might bave been eating smaller foods at that time but I suspect they’re just waiting around for their digestive tracts to appear. I did provide these fry with green water and moina but they definitely filled up with brine shrimp on the first day that they were free-swimming.
