Snakehead betta
This is a very small mouthbrooding betta, similar to Betta albimarginata. I’m keeping a pair in an 8-gallon blackwater tank, the same setup that I use for licorice gouramies. I’m feeding them a diet of baby brine shrimp and very occasional moina and mosquito larvae.
Not long after the pair arrived I noticed that the male was spending most of his time in a floating film canister. When I nudged him out into the open he was showing the uncomfortable underbite expression that suggests a mouth full of eggs. For maximum caution, I moved him, his film cannister, and a bunch of floating plants into a tiny 3/4-gallon box with a tight lid, and placed it in a warm, quiet spot on a high shelf.

8 days after the move, I noticed a single black fry among the riccia in his box. As soon as I moved the box down to eye-level to get a closer look he spat out 20 or so more fry which I scooped out into an even smaller container.
